That mountain in front of me...

I lift up my eyes to the mountains
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth. (Psalm 121)
For two months my family and I have lived in Costa Rica.  We have lived in apartment block A2 at Cincel language school.  For two months we have looked out the same window, staring at the tin slated roofs. We have stared into the beauty beyond the city-- the trees, the birds, and the mountains that are covered with clouds each day.  Mountains so tall, yet I could still make out the little antennas near the top that grasp to reach the sky.   Little did I know what we were actually fixing our eyes on each day, what beautiful thing entranced me each morning.

It wasn't until this past weekend that I saw the truth for the first time.  We bravely rented a car for the first time and set out on our first family trip. The goal-- to make it back alive.  Along the way we hoped to take the kids to Irazú Volcano that is just outside of Cartago.

It was a beautiful winding road, with potholes that reminded someone to slow down and soak in the beauty.  Rural towns with children playing in the streets and old men talking on the corner, reminded me of home.  With each curve we found ourselves closer and closer to the volcano and finally we reached the top.   And then it hit me like a ton of bricks as we rounded the last corner and my eyes fixed upon the massive antennas placed perfectly at the top of this mountain, this was Irazú.  For months I have not been staring at a mountain, but instead an active and very powerful volcano.

Which made me wonder, how can a person not know God when we as Christians so clearly understand His power and His Love?  How is is possible to not know El Elyon,  the God Most High?  How can a person stand in front of the tallest volcano in Costa Rico & just not know?

We are surrounded everyday with people who have no ideas that there is a powerful and loving God in front of them, but are we so busy that we forget to share with others that El Elyon is there?  If only I understood Spanish better, then maybe I would have realized what I was missing each day.  Maybe someone did try to share with me, but failed to speak in a way a understood.  Are we as Christians taking the time to speak the language of those around us?

I wonder how many others fail to see the incredible God that stands in front of them, simply because they don't understand.  They don't understand who God is and what He has done.  They simple see a mountain, without knowing there is a volcano right in front of them.

I came down from that volcano that day a different person. I remembered just how easy it is to miss God if you don't know what your looking for. It is easy to miss God if you don't understand what exactly is in front of you.

Father God, Let me become a person who leads people to your truth. Holy Spirit empower me with knowledge, patience, and language to reach those who are so close to you, yet haven't a clue you are there.  Open the eyes of those around me to look at the mountain and realize it is you.  Amen.
